Kim Christos, Head Coach Three-time MAC Coach of the Year, Kim Christos is the women’s lacrosse program's all-time leader in wins. She has led the Rangers to two conference titles, two ECAC Tournament title and three NCAA Tournament berths since being named head coach in 2000. Her 2005 squad was one of the best in the school’s history as it reached the NCAA Sweet 16 and the 2004 team set the school record for wins. 2009 was one of her best seasons as the Rangers earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament fpr the third time and Christos was named the Conference Coach of the Year for the fourth time.
After three consecutive 14-win seasons beginning her career at Drew, which included a Middle Atlantic Conference Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance, Christos’ 2004 squad posted 16 wins to break the school’s single season win record, while she picked up her second conference Coach of the Year award. In 2005, the veteran coach guided the Rangers to yet another 14-win season, brought home the MAC title, again won the conference Coach of the Year honor, and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
A strong proponent of academic excellence, Christos is especially proud of the academic focus and success of her student-athletes. The lacrosse team earned national recognition in 2004 as one of only three schools in the nation to earn the IWLCA Academic Merit Award with a team GPA of 3.44, and earned the organization’s Academic Award in 2005 with a team GPA of 3.42. In addition, Christos was named to the Who’s Who Among College Teachers.
An outstanding high school athlete, Christos was Massachusetts’ leading scorer in 1989. She is a 1993 graduate of the College of William and Mary, where she received a B.S. degree in psychology and kinesiology. She was a three year starter in attack for the Tribe and ranks on the school’s career assists list. The Tribe finished among the nation’s top 10 programs each of her four years with the 1992 squad claiming the Colonial Athletic Conference Championship.
Upon graduating, Christos served as the head coach at Lower Merion High School from 1994-95. A native New Englander, she returned north to serve as an assistant coach at Boston College for one season and then Brown University from 1996-98. In 1998, she returned to coach her alma mater, where in her first head coaching role, guided W&M to a top-four CAA finish. Christos resides in Madison with her husband Andy, and their four children, Andy Jr., Kate, Mae and Georgia.
Virginia Capicchioni, Assistant Coach
Virginia “Ginny” Capicchioni joined the Ranger staff in 2008 and made an immediate impact on the Drew defense and goalkeeping, in particular. A world-class keeper in her own right, Capicchioni is a trail-blazing lacrosse player and a gifted educator. Capicchioni remains an active professional player and a member of the Team USA Developmental squad in men’s indoor lacrosse.
A three-time Northeast Conference Goalie of the Year while at Division I Sacred Heart University, Capicchioni twice ranked in the NCAA’s Top 10 in Save Percentage while setting the program records for saves, goals against average and career wins. Following her collegiate career she became the first woman to sign with a men’s professional team, the first woman to play in a men’s professional lacrosse game, first American born keeper to play in a Canadian Championship and the first woman to play for a men’s national development program. No mere publicity stunt, Capicchioni has starred at some of the top indoor lacrosse tournaments in the world. She was named the MVP of the Swedish Invitational Box Lacrosse Tournament and to the All-Tournament Team at the Ales Hresbesky Memorial Tournamentin in the Czech Republic. She has played professionally with the New Jersey Storm of the National Lacrosse League as well as in the Iroquis Lacrosse Association and the Ontario Lacrosse Association.
Capichionni put her vast experience to good use in her first season with the Rangers. She helped Rachel Hanley progress into an All-Region and All-Landmark selection and Drew to the NCAA Tournament. Capichionni was the lead assistant for Head Coach Kim Christos as its Landmark peers named the Ranger brain-trust Coaching Staff of the Year in 2009.
She earned a master’s in education from Loyola College and her B.S in Political Science from Sacred Heart University.
Laura Clemente, Assistant Coach
A four-time NCAA National Champion, Laura Clemente joins the Drew University women’s lacrosse coaching staff following the completion of her playing career with the Northwestern University. Clemente won four letters while with the powerhouse Wildcats and numerous academic honors. She begins her collegiate coaching career with the Rangers and Head Coach Kim Christos in the 2009-10 season.
“Laura brings tremendous experience to our coaching staff following her playing career,” said Christos. “She is an excellent communicator and motivator as well as a highly skilled player. She will be an invaluable resource both on and off the field for our program.”
While playing nearly every position with the Wildcats, Clemente appeared in over 40 games in her career including the National Championship win over North Carolina in 2009. The Madison, NJ native was a three time All-Big Ten Academic selection and an Academic All-American as a Communication Studies and International Studies major.
At Madison High, Clemente won 12 letters including four in lacrosse. She was two-time All-Division and three times All-Conference with the Dodgers as well as an Academic All-American.
