Equestrian has been a varsity sport at Drew for 25 years, and the team is consistently ranked among the top schools in the IHSA's Zone II, Region 1. The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) was established to promote competition for riders of any skill and experience level as both individuals and as part of a team. Competitions at the Regional, Zonal and National levels are held throughout the school year, and these IHSA competitions develop sportsmanship, team enthusiasm and horsemanship.
Riders compete in English from beginner level (walk-trot) to open level (advanced). To join the team at Drew you need to be a full-time student in good academic standing. Experience is not necessary! We do not require riders to "try-out" for the team; however we participate in a pre-season riding clinic to evaluate riders' ability in order to place them in the proper IHSA division for competition.
Horse shows are held in NJ or NY on six - seven weekends during the fall semester and 3 - 4 weekends during the spring semester. Post-season competitions for riders who qualify are Regionals, Zones, and Nationals, and these shows are held in April and May.
Briarwood Farm in Readington, NJ with Jack & Kate Benson. The barn is approximately 40 minutes from campus, and team members carpool to lessons on a weekly basis. Lesson schedules are based upon student class schedules and trainer availability at the barn. In addition to weekly lessons, team members are required to participate in at least 3 workout sessions in the weight room each week and additional cardio workouts are encouraged.
At Drew, team members pay for lessons (approx $400 per semester for Hunt Seat lessons) as well as an annual IHSA membership fee (approx $20 for one discipline and $30 for two disciplines). Team members are required to provide their own riding equipment, including boots, britches, show jacket, shirt with collar, ASTM/SEI approved riding helmet, etc.
