Topic: Could America’s Image Abroad be Fixed?
Since 9/11, many in the Arab and Muslim World have read President Bush’s “global war on terrism” to be a code phrase to mean a war on Islam and Muslims, compounding America’s negative image. This is evidenced by all the Gallup and Pew polls taken in the eight post 9/11 years. Such negativism could and should be countered by a visible change in the language of discourse and the conduct of both official and popular diplomacy. Americans have offered much and can still offer more that is highly appreciated.

Professor Saad Eddin Ibrahim, Wallerstein Visiting Scholar 2009-2010
Saad Eddin Ibrahim is a professor of sociology and one of the Arab world’s most prominent human rights activists. He has written numerous important and influential works on the future of democracy in the Islamic world, and has been quoted and interviewed widely in print and television media around the globe. For most of his career Professor Ibrahim taught at the American University in Cairo (UAC). He also founded and continues to direct the IBN Khaldun Center for Development Studies. Professor Ibrahim is often described as a scholar-practitioner, as he is a leader in the struggle for democracy and human rights, especially in his native Egypt.
