Hired in the summer of 2008, Jason Fein’s tenure as the Director of Athletics at Drew University began with the 2008-09 year. Previously, Fein served in the same position at the College of Staten Island, culminating nine years of work at the school. Prior to CSI, Fein served as the Assistant Athletics Director at Brooklyn College. In his first year at Drew, he has brought a renewed energy and vision to the Ranger program.
A veteran of the CSI athletics department, Fein was formerly CSI’s Associate Director of Athletics and Sports Information Director, a position he was elevated to in July 2002 after serving as the institution’s Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director. He oversaw operations for 13 intercollegiate sports, facility and membership operations, and all facets of Sports & Recreation Center management, including staffing and external relations.
His list of accomplishments while at CSI was remarkable. The department added three sports and have two more additions planned. A new soccer complex and a new softball field were inducted during his tenure while general improvements were made to many other facilities. Most importantly, student-athlete grade point averages and retention and graduation rates improved as the academic progress plan that he enacted produced great results.
Prior to CSI, Fein spent three years as the Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director at his alma mater, Brooklyn College. He played an instrumental role in bringing back the college’s intercollegiate Division III athletics program after the school had earlier suspended their Division I program.
In his time at the College of Staten Island, Fein proved himself a highly successful fundraiser. He helped organize the annual CSI Alumni and Friends Golf Outing, as well as the CUNY Athletic Conference Goodwill Tour, which takes an all-star team overseas each summer to represent the City University of New York in international competition as well as provide instruction and clinics for local underprivileged children.
An active member of the national athletic administrative scene, Fein served on the board of directors for the ECAC Sports Information Director’s Association (ECAC-SIDA), recently serving as the organization’s president. In addition, he co-chaired the 2003 ECAC-SIDA workshop in Staten Island. He also serves as a member of the NCAA regional soccer selection committee as well as the ECAC regional basketball selection committee. Fein has worked media relations operations for the 1996 Atlanta and 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games, the 1998 Goodwill Games, and baseball playoffs with the New York Yankees since 1996. In 2006, Fein was honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) with their Inaugural Rising Star Award, given annually to a trailblazer among sports information professionals.
Fein received his Bachelors Degree in athletic training and his Masters in sports management from Brooklyn College. He currently resides in New Jersey with his wife, Cecilia and son, Zachary.
George Rodriguez, previously the Director of Varsity Sports and External Relations at Wheaton College, has been named the Assistant Athletic Director for Operations and Compliance at Drew University. Rodriguez owns a Master’s Degree from Springfield College and a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Williams College. As a student-athlete at Williams, the Florida native was an All-American in track and field and a three-time DIII National Championship participant.
Prior to joining Drew in the newly created position, Rodriguez served as the Director of Varsity Sports and External Relations at Wheaton for a year. He served as the Championships Director for all 21 varsity sports as well as the department’s Community Service Coordinator. He was active in fundraising efforts including developing and executing the inaugural Wheaton Athletics Golf Outing and enhancing the Lyons Athletic Club. He had previously earned experience as an administrator with the Westfield State College Athletics Department and as a graduate assistant with Springfield College’s admissions department.
As a student-athlete at Williams, he was an All-American in winter track in 2006, one of three times that he participated in the DIII Track and Field Championships. He was a six-time national qualifier as a middle distance and sprinter. Rodriguez earned ten DIII All-New England selections and was a two-time NESCAC Champion with the Ephs. Not surprisingly given his track credentials, Rodriguez has coaching experience as an assistant at Wheaton and Springfield.
