2008-09 Drew University Department of Athletics Accomplishments

In the second season of the Landmark Conference, Drew Athletics had:

44 All-Conference selections
22 Fencers and Equestrian Riders earned spots in their Regional Championships
29 Student-Athletes Named Player of the Week during the three seasons. In nine different sports
13 All-Regional selections – Zizik, Bonder, Mularz, Flagg (Eq), Brown, Coles, Hanley Jeffries, Rossi (WLax), Celentano, DeGiovanni, Dowiak, McNulty (MLax),
6 Conference Player of the Year, or the equivalent –  Ann Mularz (D, WSOC), Greg Zizik (O, MSOC), Elizabeth Law (O, FHOC), Alicia Rapp (Saber, WFencing), Bagley Wright (Foil, MFencing), Jeffrey Marshall (MTEN) 
1 Conference Rookie of the Year - Jeffrey Marshall (MTEN – he is the first Landmark Conference student-athlete to win ROY and POY in same year) 
1 Conference Coach of the Year – Kim Christos (WLAX) 
1 National All-American (Dan Bonder, MSOC)
1 NJAIAW Woman of the Year (Ann Mularz)

On the academics side, we have had:
More than 80 Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll selections, 12 Landmark All-Academic Team honorees and Ann Mularz was named the Women’s Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year. Ann was also the NJAIAW Woman of the Year and an ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-American. Michael DeGiovanni was named a USILA Scholar All-American in men’s lacrosse.
We also had our women’s basketball team rank in the Top Ten in the nation with a cumulative 3.5 GPA.

Six teams reached the post-season playoffs, or their sport’s equivalent, with
One conference champion:
Men’s Tennis won its ninth consecutive conference title, and second straight Landmark Crown.

Special Achievement Awards
Most Valuable Player
Each team selects their most valuable player based on criteria established by the team. A picture of the MVP is displayed outside the coaches office for one year.
Female and Male Athletes of the Year
These two honors go to seniors who display sportsmanship, commitment, leadership, outstanding performance, breadth of participation, achievements, and awards.

Harry Simester Character Award
The award annually goes to a senior student, male or female, who gives such spirit, dedication, and energy supporting the athletic program as a whole, including athletic varsities, that he or she becomes a role model and gives the programs and teams the drive to excel.

Sherman Plato Young Scholarship
The athletic department nominates some recipients on the basis of character, need, scholarship, and extra-curricular participation. The scholarship committee actually names the recipient.

Paul Seymour Service Award
The award goes to that student, perhaps a manager but open to any Drew student, whose spirit, support, and aid to the entire athletic department has been exemplary and, if he or she works within the department, goes above and beyond any assigned duty.

This award is based on total service to intramurals, through dedication, participation and contribution.
