Program Overview
The saying "dark cloud with a silver lining" certainly applies to the fire that ravaged historic Mead Hall on August 24, 1989. The campus community stood sad vigil that day at what appeared to be the end for the stately mansion built long before the University got its start. But with the help of preservation experts, what began as a tragedy has yielded a beautifully restored campus centerpiece and inspired an educational program to benefit Drew and all of New Jersey's citizens.
Now entering its twelfth year, the Certificate in Historic Preservation has offered over 100 courses, provided essential training to local historic commissions, received a grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, and was the recipient of a 2001 New Jersey Historic Preservation Award. But most importantly, this program has awarded certificates to over 133 graduates who continue to promote the importance of historic preservation in their own community. Some have even gone on to graduate programs and new careers as a result of their experience at Drew University.
These courses are designed for anyone interested in the field of preservation: members of historic preservation commissions, town planners, attorneys and engineers. Our audience includes real estate professionals, volunteers at historic sites, owners of old or historic buildings, architects, developers and contractors, designers, and artisans in the construction field.
