VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Preserve Greystone is a group of committed citizens from all walks of life and all points on the political spectrum who are united in our concern for the preservation of the historic Greystone hospital and the priceless open space that surrounds it. If you are interested in joining us, please let us know!  Preserve Greystone welcomes all volunteers, but we have an immediate and special need for people with fundraising, grant writing, engineering, public relations, community activism/organizing or clerical skills, and for those with backgrounds in open space/historic preservation and adaptive reuse.

Sunday, March 7, 2010, 4 p.m. • William Gibbons and Cornelius Vanderbilt Spring Lecture and Fundraiser

T.J. Stiles, author and winner of the 2009 National Book Award for his biography on Cornelius Vanderbilt, The First Tycoon, will speak on the intersection in history of Gibbons and Vanderbilt, two contrasting personalities who were born in the same year (1794), but took different career paths.

DOCENT OPPORTUNITY

The Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission is looking for volunteers to act as docents for tours through the Somerset County Historic Courthouse.  The tours are a part of Somerset County's Weekend Journey Through the Past.  The Historic Courthouse tours are scheduled for Saturday October 10th from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM & Sunday October 11th from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM.  For more information on the weekend, visit http://www.SCHistoryWeekend.com.

Preservation Easement Trust, Inc. proudly presents “Preserving History in a Changing Economy.” Join tri-state area Historic Preservation professionals on Thursday, September 24, 2009 in Haddonfield, NJ for a conference focusing on creative ways to further historic preservation in the current economy. Experts will review the current climate for historic preservation, financing options and tax incentives for historic preservation including Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credits and more. This conference will provide immediately useful information for preservation professionals including historic site managers and attorneys and finance professionals dealing with preservation projects and investments. Executive Director, The Montclair Foundation and Van Vleck House & Gardens
Mission
The Montclair Foundation was established in 1979 to support not-for-profit organizations which meet the health, educational, cultural, social service and quality of life needs of Montclair and its environs. Van Vleck House & Gardens, which is located on six acres in Montclair, New Jersey and is owned by The Montclair Foundation, is dedicated to preserving for public enrichment the spirit and beauty of its late 19th and early 20th century house and gardens. Continuing the Van Vleck family’s commitment to the community and to horticultural excellence, the house serves as a center for nonprofit organizations and the gardens are open to the public for display, education and research.

Summary of Position

The Executive Director (“ED”) serves as chief executive officer and spokesperson of The Montclair Foundation (“Foundation”) and Van Vleck House & Gardens (“VVH&G”). The ED is responsible to the Board of Trustees of The Montclair Foundation (“Foundation Board”) and the Van Vleck Board of Management (“VVBOM”) to achieve the goals set forth in the long range strategic plan, successfully manage the affairs of the total organization, and operate within an approved annual budget.
The ED directs and coordinates:

  • The administrative functions of the Foundation and VVH&G, including reports to the Foundation Board and VVBOM, management of staff, support of volunteers, and oversight of daily operations.
  • The financial function, including the management of staff, planning and budget activities, grant writing, and conduct of the Foundation’s grants program.
  •  The public relations function, including the development and implementation of marketing and public relations campaigns to increase visibility and create awareness of the organization, its programs and fundraising events.
  • The property management function, including the maintenance and improvement of the buildings and grounds, and oversight of the major phases of the garden development plan. 
  • The programmatic function, including the management and development of the staff, programs, activities and coordination of educational and horticultural resources, and the implementation of a long range property plan.

The ED will work with the VVBOM, Foundation Board and committee chairs to develop and direct educational programs and events, fundraising activities, community and volunteer development and personnel and volunteer management.
Reporting directly to the ED will be the Garden Manager, Business Manager, Education Director and the administrative and caretaking staff.  The ED reports to the Chair of the VVBOM.
Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of the management and use of the property.  
  • In cooperation with the Boards, develop and execute short- and long-range plans to achieve the goals of the Foundation and VVH&G. 
  • Manage the preservation and enhancement of the VVH&G buildings and grounds, including identification and oversight of general maintenance and capital projects.  
  • Oversee the Foundation’s community grants program. 
  • Develop, motivate and lead the staff in accomplishing the missions of the Foundation and VVH&G. Maintain a climate that attracts, retains and motivates top quality staff and volunteers. Recommend compensation plans and evaluate staff on a regular basis.  
  • Direct and implement all public relations activities, including press releases, web site, brochures, newsletters, educational programs and special events. Implement programs to expand public awareness and increase garden attendance, house rentals and other revenues.  
  • Support and participate in all fundraising and development activities of the Foundation and VVH&G, including Friends (membership) programs and capital campaigns. 
  • Jointly with the VVBOM, develop and direct the educational programs that serve the VVH&G mission and the goals of the education committee.  
  • Manage the financial operations of the Foundation and VVH&G. Prepare the annual budget.  
  • Execute grant applications in support of the funding of VVH&G.

Qualifications

  • A proven leader and manager with at least three years of experience in not-for-profit management and public garden/preservation. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and support volunteer boards.  
  • Ability to recruit, develop and manage staff and work with and support volunteers.  
  • Demonstrated ability to do fundraising and grants solicitation.  
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Strong project management and time management skills and the ability to prioritize and assist staff with prioritizing projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with donors, the larger community and constituencies of the organization. 
  • Experience with financial management. 
  • Computer skills, including e-mail and Word.
