All courses in this program are grouped according to four areas of concentration:
- Theory and Practice (T&P)
- Architectural History/History (AH/H)
- Planning (PLAN)
- Conservation (CONS)
Courses may be taken individually or as part of the certificate. Except the three required courses, not all courses are offered each year.
Requirements for the Certificate
To insure that our students develop important basic competencies as well as a broad understanding of various aspects of historic preservation, the following certificate requirements have been established. In order to be awarded the certificate, students must complete:
- a minimum of 15 continuing education units (CEUs)
- one course in each of the four program concentrations. This includes any course from the conservation track and the following three required courses:
- Introduction to Historic Preservation (T&P)
- American Architectural History (AH/H)
- Practicing Preservation: Advocacy to Zoning (PLAN)

Entrance Requirements
Drew University's Certificate in Historic Preservation has an open enrollment policy.
Course Requirements
Students should expect out-of-class research and writing assignments as part of the course requirements.
Continuing Education Units
One CEU is defined by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training as 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. Drew University, as the sponsor, calculates the number of CEUs to be awarded and maintains all records pertaining to the CEUs earned by participants.
