What If It Rains?

What If It Rains?

We hope the weather will cooperate so we can hold our Commencement ceremony outdoors and will make determinations as late as possible. We will also wait until it is necessary to decide if family and friends will be able to park on campus or if we will be utilizing a nearby parking facility and shuttle service. In the case of heavy rain, we will hold the ceremony in Simon Forum.

If and when a decision is made, we will send an email to the community and post information to the Drew homepage, at this site and to our Twitter and Facebook feeds.

We strongly prefer to hold our celebration of the Class of 2018 outdoors, and in the case of light rain or scattered showers, we are prepared to supply ponchos for our graduates. We advise all participants and visitors to plan appropriately, especially regarding outerwear and footwear.

Rain Update, May 11, 2018

We recognize that there is a high probability of rain overnight and into the morning, so please note the following details that will be helpful in making it a wonderful event celebrating our graduates:
  •  Both the parking and the ceremony are on grass that will most likely be soft and a bit muddy. Please choose footwear appropriately.
  • We are scheduled to open seating to our audience at 9 a.m. but ask for patience from our guests if we are making some last-minute, post-rain adjustments to the seating (like drying them off!). We will open the seating as soon as possible and look forward to accommodating our guests.
  • We request that audience members be in their seats by 10:30 a.m. Our ceremonial procession will begin prior to that.
  • If it begins to rain during the ceremony, we will continue unless it is deemed unsafe. Guests should plan accordingly, although we request that umbrellas not be used in the seating area. Graduates and faculty will be provided ponchos. Also, guests are welcome to move to indoor venues such as Seminary Hall 101, Seminary Atrium, the Ehinger Center, Learning Center 28, and the classroom on the ground floor of the Library where the livestream will be broadcast. There will also be a screen in the Commons Concourse.
  • If we do need to pause our ceremony, all audience members will be given specific instructions about where to go and when we will continue the ceremony.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation as we plan for a wonderful day. We look forward to welcoming our guests to campus and congratulating the Class of 2018!

Will my family, friends and I need tickets if the ceremony is held indoors?

No. Our seating capacity is approximately 3,500 seats for both indoor and outdoor venues, so your family and friends will not need tickets for Commencement. Out of consideration for others, please use discretion in the number of guests you invite to ensure that others may share in the celebration. Seating in either location will be open at 9 a.m. and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Overflow seating and additional viewing of the ceremony will be available through livestreaming in various locations around campus and anywhere where there is an internet connection. Only guests with visible disability parking placards or license plates will be granted access to disability parking, which is available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can find more information here.

Where will the receptions after the ceremony be held if it rains?

The reception locations have been planned for indoor locations regardless of weather, so these celebrations will not be impacted by inclement weather. You can find those locations listed here.

Where will we robe if it rains?

All robing sites, regardless of the ceremony location, are in the Simon Forum and can be found here.

What if we cannot be at the ceremony in person?

A livestream of the ceremony will be available, rain or shine, and can be viewed from anywhere. We will also streaming the ceremony to screens in Crawford Hall in the Ehinger Center and LC 28 in the Library for friends and family that are on-campus but not at the ceremony itself.

We will continue to communicate with you about the location of our Commencement ceremony and parking over the next several days.
