2011 Student Computer Purchase

We are offering the ability for current students to purchase the latest student CI computers. These computers will be supported in the same fashion that they will be for incoming students, and can serve as a supported Drew computer for students who wish to purchase them.

Questions

Q: What models are available?

A: The models we are offering are the Apple 13″ MacBook, Apple 13″ MacBook Pro, Lenovo Thinkpad L420, and the Lenovo ThinkPad T420s. Please note: Apple has recently upgraded the MacBook Pro and that model replaces the one the class of 2015 students received in the Fall. Full specifications of the computers are available on the 2011 student computer information page.

Q:  Will I get a trade in for my current laptop?

A: CNS will be unable to offer a trade in for any current student laptop.  When students received their current laptop, they signed a contract stating the terms and conditions under which they received the laptop.  All terms of that contract remain in full effect.  You are still responsible for returning or buying out that computer if you leave Drew before Drew’s security interest in the computer is satisfied.

Q:  When will I receive the computer?

A: CNS will distribute the computers before winter break, barring a delay in shipping from the vendor. You will be contacted by email about the times, dates and locations you can pick up your new computer.

Q:  What will be on the computer?

A: The computers will be configured exactly the same as the first-year students’ computers, with the same software, management utilities, and configuration, as described on the 2011 student computer information page. Please note that the MacBook and MacBook Pro, unlike those ordered for the beginning of the Fall semester, will come with MacOS X Lion rather than SnowLeopard.

Q:  How will the CNS Helpdesk support my new computer?

A: We will support the computer the same way we support all Computer Initiative computers for as long as you’re a student at Drew.  Once you leave Drew, the remainder of the manufacturer’s warranty will be in effect, and you can get support at the relevant vendor warranty center.

Q:  What is the difference in the warranties?

A: The Macs have 3 year AppleCare, which extends the warranty on the computer but DOES NOT cover user damage repairs, such as cracked screens, spills, or other such damage.  The ThinkPads come with 4 year ThinkPad Protection, which covers spills, breakage, and other accidental damage.

Q:  My current Drew laptop doesn’t work.  Why don’t you just give me a new Mac?

A: CNS’s obligations for repair of your laptop are stated in the contract you signed when you received the laptop.  As all of the previous laptops (with the exception of the Macs handed out earlier in the Fall) we have offered have 4 year ThinkPad Protection, users are entitled to have their current laptops repaired to working order in nearly all circumstances.  Replacement laptops are only handled in specific cases of multiple hardware repairs on the same laptop, and then only at the discretion of the vendor, which means an equivalent or updated model from the same vendor.  The student laptop program does not cover the additional costs of replacement computers for students.
