Frequently Asked Questions

Does Drew offer financial aid to international students?

Drew offers a very limited program of financial assistance for international students applying for first-year admission. In fact, only U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens are considered for assistance. All other international students must demonstrate their ability to pay in full both the direct and indirect costs of attendance.

Can I work or have an internship as an international student?
Yes. Drew's Career Center helps students find internships and work opportunities in the New York metropolitan area and around the world. International students may participate in unpaid internships and should consult the International Student Advisor about paid positions. Note: some types of student visas may exclude foreign nationals from earning wages in the United States.

Is the campus safe?
Yes. Drew University is located in the safe, suburban town of Madison, New Jersey. There is 24 hour patrol by the University's Public Safety staff as well as emergency phones located throughout the campus.

What is the international student population at Drew?
7 percent of the overall student body at Drew.

Do you have ESL services?
Yes. While Drew University does not offer an intensive program for English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), there is an ESOL Coordinator on staff who works with students individually to help them overcome any language problems. Likewise, international students are encouraged to take advantage of the Writing Center in the library, as well as the tutoring program.

How do I get to campus?
Drew is located only 30 miles west of New York City. The campus is accessible by train or bus from Manhattan and by taxi from Liberty (Newark) International Airport, about 30 minutes away.

Is there a special orientation for international students?
Yes. This orientation traditionally begins a few days before the regular orientation session. Any student joining the Drew community from overseas is invited to participate (dual nationals, permanent residents, and Americans abroad).

Is housing available over holiday recess?
Yes and No. The residence halls are closed at three different times during the year: The week of Thanksgiving (in November), the period between the end of final examinations (mid-December) and the beginning of the second semester (last week of January), and Spring Break (March). During these times, undergraduate residents may have to make arrangements to stay off campus. Students may choose to go home with friends during these periods or, if necessary, may stay on campus in University housing for a modest fee. (Please note: this fee is in addition to the room costs for the academic year.) This housing, however, may not be the same residence hall room in which you live during the rest of the year.

Where can I find information regarding immigration procedures?
Information regarding immigration procedures is available in the International Student Application Booklet.
