Information for Early Decision Applicants
Why Drew Encourages Early Decision
Many competitive high school students consider applying to a college under the Early Decision (ED) Plan. ED is a binding commitment where students, once admitted, are obligated to withdraw all other applications and to enroll at a specific college.
Finding the right match between student and college is the most important part of any admissions process. Because the ED applicant pool is smaller than the regular pool, the admissions staff has more time to review your application and get to know you. Also, students who apply Early Decision are among the first considered for merit scholarships and financial assistance.
During ED, your candidacy is assessed by answering the following question: "Is this student a good match for Drew?" By contrast, during Regular Decision (RD), applicants are assessed more comparatively -- with students competing against one another for the places remaining in the class.
If you think you are right for Drew and would like to consider applying ED, we encourage you to do so. If you'd like to talk more about Early Decision at Drew, please visit our Admissions Counselor page to access contact information for your regional admissions counselor.
How to Apply Early Decision
1. Submit the Following Required Forms
An Early Decision application is incomplete until these forms have been received.
2. Submit an Application
Once you have submitted the above forms, choose an application.
- Early Decision applications will be reviewed from November 1 through January 15.
- Notification of admission status is typically provided within four weeks from the date the application and all supporting materials have been received.
- All applicants accepted under an Early Decision plan must submit an enrollment deposit within three weeks of notification of admission, as Early Decision is a binding program.
- Admitted students who do not submit this deposit within the three-week period will forfeit their offer of Early Decision admission and will not be considered again for Regular Decision admission.
Information for Drew Priority Applicants
The Drew Priority Application is an application through which the Office of College Admissions offers select students the opportunity to apply to Drew early and receive an admission notification early. The Drew Priority Application is not an Early Decision application, as it is does NOT signify a binding agreement. While Drew Priority applicants receive their admission notification early, they are not required to notify Drew of their decision to attend the university until May 1.
The Benefits of the Drew Priority Application
- Priority applicants receive early notification of their admission status.
- Priority applicants are exempt from having to pay Drew’s $50 application fee.
- Priority applicants are among the first students in the entire application pool to be considered for scholarship monies.
Note: The following admissions candidates may not make use of the Drew Priority Application: EOS, dual-degree (BA/MD), Early Decision, transfer, and international students.
Information for Regular Decision Applicants
Students applying as regular decision candidates are given equal consideration during the admission review process by the selection committee.
Students typically begin to submit applications in early October.
Drew complies with the Candidate's Reply Date of May 1. Admitted students must submit a nonrefundable enrollment deposit of $300 by May 1 to accept their offer of admission.
About the Process
Drew's College of Liberal Arts seeks a diverse, energetic, and talented first-year class. Typically about two thirds of the college's students have graduated in the top quarter of their secondary school class; about one third come from the top ten percent of their class.
Although no specific courses are required for admission to the college, Drew strongly recommends that students take:
- four years of English
- three years of mathematics
- two years of lab science
- two years of a foreign language
- two years of history and the social sciences
- at least three additional academic college preparatory courses
Special Admissions Programs
Drew offers special admissions programs, including the Dual-Degree Medical Program and Educational Opportunity Scholars. Learn more about these programs.
Dual-Degree Medical Program
A formal articulation agreement between the College of Liberal Arts of Drew University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ-NJMS) makes it possible for prospective first-year students to apply directly to a special, seven year dual-degree program in medicine. Students are admitted simultaneously to both Drew and New Jersey Medical School. Successful candidates spend three years of study at Drew and four years at NJMS, completing both B.A. and M.D. degrees.
For more information on the Dual-Degree program, please refer to the college catalog. Please note that additional qualifications and application instructions.
Educational Opportunity Scholars
The Educational Opportunity Scholars Program is a partnership between the NJ Commission of Higher Education and Drew University. Within this partnership, the program provides access to higher education and support for highly motivated students who exhibit the potential for success, but come from families of low income and lack access to the quality educational preparation necessary to attend college. The program provides direct services designed to promote persistence through degree completion. Furthermore, the program supports innovative educational initiatives, support services, and leadership development activities to enhance the student's chance for academic success.
