This public lecture is part of what will be a regular series on the historical legacies of Drew Theological School. The inaugural lecture will consider Drew’s intellectual, scholarly, and institutional legacy in relation to work of the late Drew professor, Thomas Oden. This presentation and discussion will explore what it means for Drew to be a theological school with a progressive ethos and identity, but a history of teaching and scholarship that confronted liberal theology and social progressivism directly and forcefully. How have we dealt with that era of contestation and internal struggle? What can be learned to comprehend and strengthen Drew’s theologically and culturally diverse learning community? What is Drew’s legacy as a source for global scholarship on Wesleyan/Methodist studies in light of our contested traditions? This lecture will be provided by Dr. Morris Davis, Associate Professor of the History of Christianity and Wesleyan/Methodist Studies, Director of Wesleyan/Methodist Studies. Open to the public at 6:00 pm in Craig Chapel, followed by a reception. Find out more »
