WHERE IT ALL BEGAN:
Irena Sendler, a Polish social worker, is credited with saving the lives of 2,500 Jewish children during World War II. Irena forged documents to present herself as a nurse to guards at the entrance of the Warsaw Ghetto as a ruse. Managing to bring the Jewish children to safety, Irena joined the efforts of a Polish underground group known as Zegota.
Irena Sendler kept thin tissue paper lists of each child’s Jewish name, their Polish name, and address. She then would hide the lists in glass jars buried under apple trees. In 1943, she was arrested, tortured, and sentenced to death by the German firing squad. Unknown to her, the Zegota bribed a guard to rescue her life. As a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Irena passed away in 2008 at the age of 98.
After the war, Irena’s heroic actions were almost lost to the world, until four Kansas schoolgirls discovered her courageous story for a history project. The middle school children at the time wrote “Life in a Jar” to commemorate the heroism of Irena Sendler. Since then, the cast has performed the “Life in a Jar” production more than 200 times in the United States, Canada, and Poland.
The play is very easy to understand and it is so powerful because of its simplicity. Those who have seen the play, including myself, attest to its educational value and message of tolerance.
