Team of Distinction
One of the top defensive teams in the region in 1987, Hall of Fame Head Coach Vernon Mummert’s men’s soccer team is this year’s Team of Distinction. Led by one of Drew’s all-time best goalkeepers, Mike Diamond, the Rangers claimed the 1987 ECAC-Metro Championship. Diamond set a school record with 10 shutouts and tied the school mark for most saves in a season with 137. The Rangers defense allowed only 15 goals in 21 games and had two All-Conference defenders in Peter Perraro and Andy Grzenda. On offense the Rangers tallied 41 goals with 11 coming off the foot of leading scorer Dave Hevey. After winning the ECAC-Metro Region with a 2-0 win over SUNY-New Paltz, the Rangers marched all the way to the ECAC Finals where they eventually fell 2-0 to Williams College.
