Dr. Pyun, Sun Hwan (1927-1995) is one of the most prominent theologians for interreligious dialogue in the twentieth century. He was born in Jin Nam Po, Korea. He studied theology at Methodist Theological University and Hanshin University in Seoul, Korea. He graduated from the STM program at Drew University Theological School in 1967 and earned his Dr. Theol. at the University of Basel in Switzerland in 1976. Dr. Pyun served as the professor in Systematic Theology and president of Methodist Theological University in Seoul, Korea. Based on a theology of indigenization, a liberation theology of religion and religious pluralism, he evolved a Korean “pluralistic liberation theology of religion.” He emphasized that Christianity and other religions can meet each other through “unbounded responsibility and love” towards the formation of the responsible community. He was invited as the Vosburgh visiting professor to Drew and taught Asian Theology and Asian Christology in January 1987. In October 1987, he also was invited with Paul Knitter to the Tipple-Vosburgh Lectures at Drew and gave a lecture on “Buddhist-Christian Dialogue towards the Liberation of Minjung.”
