The Drew University Board of Trustees recently announced the appointment of Dean Criares C’85 as its chair. Dean has served on the board since 2004 when he was selected as one of two college alumni-elected trustees. As Chair, he will work closely with the president to advance the university’s mission, including financial planning and fund raising. For the immediate future, that means working with his former professor, Vivian Bull, who now serves as Drew’s president.
Dean graduated from Drew in 1985 with a double-major in political science and economics, as well as good memories of the United Nations semester and the men’s varsity baseball team. He has continued to be actively involved with Drew ever since. Dean served for many years as a member of the College Alumni Association and the Drew Alumni Recruitment Team (DART). In 1997, he began participating as a speaker in Drew’s Wall Street Semester, which offers students an in-depth introduction to New York’s financial markets. He chaired the Presidential Planning Commission’s Alumni/ae Task Force in 2003 and served for four years on the Metro New York Committee for Drew’s Gateways to the Future campaign.
In 2010, the Drew College Alumni Association awarded Dean an Alumni Achievement Award in Business in recognition of his exceptional and sustained professional success, especially at The Blackstone Group, an asset management and financial services firm. Between 2002 and 2010, Dean founded Blackstone Debt Advisors, headed Blackstone’s management of structured investment vehicles and served as co-chairman of the team’s Investment Committee. Earlier this year, Dean was also awarded the Drew Athletic Hall of Fame Gold D Award for his dedication to and support of Ranger Athletics.
