COULD AMERICA’S IMAGE BE FIXED?
Since September 11, 2001, many in the Arab and Muslim world have read
President Bush’s “global war on terrorism” to be a code phrase to mean
a war on Islam and on Muslims, compounding America’s negative image. This
is evidenced by all the Gallup and Pew polls taken in the eight post-9/11
years. Such negativism could and should be countered by a visible change
in the language of discourse and the conduct of both official and popular
diplomacy. Americans have offered much and can still offer more that is
highly appreciated.
