The heart of the humanities does not lie in answers; it's in the questions. What makes us human? Is it the stories we tell? The art and music we create? Our desire to understand our past? In the study of the humanities, it is all those things and so much more. Drew’s humanities program, which offers a minor, takes an interdisciplinary approach to exploring the humanities from many angles. Semester-length courses are taught by two professors from different fields. For example, a medievalist and an anthropologist might teach a course on the rise of African-American intellectualism in Harlem and Paris in the 1920s.

This blending of disciplines gives students the opportunity to hear varying perspectives on the topics being discussed and to understand how academics challenge and enhance each other’s understanding. The program’s comparative humanities courses examine how both Western and non-Western influences have shaped our history, aesthetics, and ideas. Students come away from humanities courses with both a deeper and broader appreciation of the world. As the program’s motto says, students will “get the whole picture.”
