Edwin Cruz was the 2011 recipient of the Richard W. Goralsky Memorial Scholarship. Established in 1997 by Trudy Goralsky Bauer C’62 in memory of her late husband, the scholarship is awarded to a first-year student with financial need who demonstrates outstanding promise. Now in his second year at Drew, Edwin is majoring in Anthropology and Art.
Dear Ms. Goralsky Bauer:
I would like to thank you for allowing me to achieve what many students take for granted: a chance to have a proper college career without having to worry about financial troubles.
Being the oldest and the only boy in my family, going to college means everything to me and my parents. Both my mother and father lived in a small, poor town in Mexico having to struggle with poverty, while at the same time, sacrificing an education to find work to help their families. After my parents got together, they knew life in the United States could be the light of hope for a brighter future: they left Mexico at the young age of 20.
Now that I have grown, not only as a student but as a son as well, I acknowledge the sacrifices my parents made to give me a better life and strive to do well in school. Entering my first year of high school, I took regular classes. But as the years progressed, I started taking harder classes, pushing myself to become the great student my parents could be proud of. I became the first in my family to graduate high school and hold a diploma with my name. The next big step was choosing where to study next.
Drew University was always my first choice. Even though financially it would be difficult to accomplish, I wanted to take that chance regardless. The day I received my letter of acceptance, and the notice about receiving this scholarship, everything I had worked so hard to accomplish had come true. I cried and cried till I had finished reading every single word. I know now that I have been given a chance to accomplish something my parents unfortunately could not have. I need to study harder and know every sacrifice I make will be for the best. I need to take advantage of any help, financial or personal, and create a better life for myself.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to study at the always wonderful Drew University. Both my parents and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I will do everything in my power to continue working hard and becoming a phenomenal Drew student.
